The DIY disaster plan

When doing a little DIY most of us are impulsive, we decide one Sunday morning to redecorate a room and off we nip to B & Q or our local DIY shop to get a few essentials and then we make a start. But, did we really think it through? Making a plan can not only save you time but also save costly mistakes, helping your bank balance in the long run!

So what should I do?

  • Research is essential, think about what you want, find colours, fabrics and furniture, make a collage of images of the things you think will go together and see if they do.

  • Take measurements of your room, windows and spaces to ensure all your dream furnishings will actually fit.

  • Remember to consider electrical, phone and TV points should you need them and if the furniture will coincide with them, such as where you want your lighting, TVs, phones and computers to live.

  • Think about the use of space, for example if you are redesigning a living room, where does the TV point need to be in relation to the sofa so all parties can see it clearly, also check if light from windows will reflect on the TV causing you to have to close blinds or curtains permanently.

It is wise at this point to now pause, you have a plan, a good idea of what you want, but before you start your online shop for all your bits, prepare and decorate the room. This means removing any old wallpaper, sand down all woodwork, fill in any holes or cracks and then dust, hoover and clear up any debris. Tape around windows, joints, spotlights and door handles. Now your ready to paint!

Where do I start?

The ceiling always the ceiling! That way if you splash the walls or floor it wont matter as they are being done next (obviously cover the floor if this is not the case.) Naturally following from the ceiling will be the walls and then the woodwork before finishing with the flooring.

Now just before you get trigger happy and start clicking on that 'Buy now' button for all your goods you saved in your basket, take another look at your newly decorated room, are you sure all that you chose will still work with it? If you are then press that button and bring that room to life!
